DG calls for urgent reopening of schools for children’s safety

Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi. Contrary to popular calls, he wants the government to reopen schools for their safety.

In a rare pronouncement on reopening of schools, Deputy Governor (DG) of Machakos Francis Mwangangi has called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) to quickly let children go to school for their own safety.

Rather than delaying school reopening, Mwangangi emphasized the need for ensuring safe access to education for all students.

Expressing concern over the risks of prolonged school closures, Mwangangi highlighted the potential for youth involvement in undesirable activities while at home.

“Keeping our youth idle at home is risky; they are safer and better engaged in school environments,” he stressed, advocating against further postponements of school resumption scheduled for next week.

“We must come together to find solutions,” Mwangangi urged, citing government interventions for flood-affected communities. “Just as the government is addressing flood challenges, we must prioritize reopening our schools promptly,” he added.

Machakos County has witnessed tragic losses with over 15 fatalities due to flooding, particularly impacting Kangundo, Matungulu, Mavoko, and Machakos town.

According to a report by the County Commissioner Josephine Ouko, thousands of locals have been affected by the floods while hundreds are in camps.
