Politicians from insecurity areas of Baringo have questioned the government’s commitment to lasting solution to banditry that has threatened lives and displaced thousands in the region.
Members of County Assembly Sam Lokales (Tirioko) David Sitoi (Bartabwa) and Daniel Tuwit (Ribko) wondered why the government continues to allocate huge amount of money, resources and security personnel to the areas instead of embracing education.
Lokales said the government should change tact by building boarding schools in all locations and force children between 6 to 15 years to join school.
He said the move to absorb all children in school will minimize cases of parents making their children to herd cattle and endearing them to banditry.
Tuwit reiterated that the multi-agency security teams deployed to the area should embrace the community and help them understand the importance of education.
“It is unfortunate that the present government continues to apply old tactics to subdue residents. It is high time we ask the government embrace our idea of taking children to school to save the next generation and allow peace in the area to thrive,” said Tuwit.
Sitoi however noted that the communities in the area must abandon their retrogressive cultures, suggesting that schools should be established on the borders of Baringo North and South and Tiaty constituencies.
