Junior secondary schools (JSS) teachers in Elgeyo Marakwet have vowed to stay out of class until the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) confirm them into Permanent and Pensionable terms.

And they demand compensation in what they termed as exploitation of labour.

While staging demonstrations in Iten town, the teachers called on the government to increase funding to the Ministry to facilitate proper remuneration of teachers saying they work under difficult conditions with meager pay.

Speaking to the press, county secretary of JSS teachers Stephen Kitum said internship is illegal adding that the teachers are suffering given the work load they handle and the conditions of the learning environment vowing not to return to school until their grievances are heard and acted upon.

“We are here today to tell the nation that teachers of Junior schools are suffering so much. Internship is illegal. We will not go back to class until that time when the government takes us back with our Permanent and Pensionable letters,” he remarked.

Kitum said the teachers need recognition, confirmation and compensation for the time they have been working for the commission.

The same sentiments were echoed by Norah Jepkurui, who said the teachers are wasted and misplaced. She said their labour rights have been violated alleging that the Commission denied female teachers maternity leave as required.
