Wings to Fly sponsored 2000 needy students in 2022/23, reveals bank

Equity Bank's Kisii Branch Manager Nelson Mireri. 2000 students benefitted from the Wings to Fly programme in the 2022/2023 FY.

Equity Bank’s Wings to Fly programme sponsored 2000 students from poor homes across the country in the Financial Year (FY) 2022-2023 to the tune of Ksh2 billion.

This was revealed by the bank’s Kisii Branch Manager Nelson Mireri when he flagged off a holiday conference at Kisii School for more than 200 beneficiaries of the programme, saying their institution will continue giving back to society as a corporate social responsibility (CSR).

“We feel happy and rewarded by God when we save souls from poor homes by supporting them to get quality education,” he said.

Mireri said the successful applicants are given full scholarships throughout their university education, asking the beneficiaries to conduct themselves well throughout the session.

He assured the students and their guardians of their security during the whole session that will end tomorrow.

“We are working in collaboration with the County Commissioner’s office to make sure that our children train in a peaceful atmosphere without any outside interruption,” he said.

The beneficiaries are drawn from Migori, Mbita, Keroka and Kisii branches.

At the neighbouring Nyamira County, more than 600 beneficiaries of the Governor’s Education Fund Foundation assembled at Nyansiongo Boys School for their holiday life skills pupillage.

According to nominated MCA Martha Marwa, the coordinator of the programme, the students were taken through personal care, financial management, career choice, among other social issues like morality and sexual abstinence before marriage.

“We invited experts who include teachers, doctors, pastors and psychologists to share widely with the children,” the coordinator said.

Education CECM Dr Emily Ongaga, who graced day two session, said the programme was started to top up the NGCDF bursary.

In a school April holiday that is proving to be a busy one for youth in the region, another conference is going on at Sironga Girls High School for secondary school students.

According to Pr Enock Omwenga of Nyamira Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church, it is aimed at training girls on the necessity of remaining chaste to avoid early pregnancies which will take a toll on their education. It ends on Saturday.
