Inferno destroys dormitory at Mumbuni High School

A dormitory at Mumbuni Boys high school on fire.

A fierce fire broke out last night at Mumbuni High School in Machakos sub-county, razing down part of a dormitory that houses 220 Form 2 and 3 students.

According to Machakos County Regional Fire Officer Francis Nzioki, the fire erupted after students had retired to their dormitories following evening preps.

While the exact cause of the blaze is yet to be determined, Nzioki reported that the fire spread rapidly, consuming student valuables.

“Firefighters, police officers, and teachers worked together to control the inferno, but much had already been damaged,” Nzioki said.

The property lost in the blaze is yet to be valued.

Machakos County Police Commander Patrick Lobolia, in a separate statement, noted that quick intervention ensured no casualties.

“Our officers and the school administration acted swiftly to relocate the students to adjacent dormitories, ensuring their safety. Detectives were on-site throughout the night, combing the area and conducting a headcount to ensure all students were accounted for,” Lobolia said.

He added that investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

This marks the second incident of unrest at the school this term. Just last week, students were sent home after rioting and causing extensive damage to school property by hurling stones and smashing window panes.

In Mwala sub-county at AIC Kunikila secondary school, property of unknown worth was also destroyed in a fire while students were in class learning.
