Concerns arise relating to teachers using 8-4-4 methods to teach CBC

TSC Director Teacher Professional Management Reuben Mugwuku Nthamburi. He is concerned that teachers are still using the 8-4-4 methodologies to teach CBC.

As the Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs) 3-day workshop kicked off yesterday at Lake Naivasha Resort, it was noted that teachers still apply the teaching pedagogies of the 8-4-4 system of education.

In his presentation, Director Teacher Professional Management Dr Mugwuku Nthamburi said it was out of place to use the 8-4-4 teaching and learning methodology to teach the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

He noted that outlawed practices such as buying of assessment tools, ranking of learners and downloading of schemes of work are still persisting in many schools, imploring CSOs to be on the lookout so as to stem this practice which is undermining the implementation of the CBC.

The workshop saw over 1400 CSOs, both regular and SNE, congregate to undergo the training that also targets over 280 TSC Sub-county Directors who will take up their part from tomorrow.

Teachers are advised to use digital devices in preparing schemes of work as a thorough scrutiny of the commercial ones available online do not meet the requirements of the rationalized curriculum.

The workshop enters its second day today with CSOs having a basketful of expectations from its employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The objective of the workshop is to sensitize the CSOs on School Based Teacher Support System (SBTSS).

Part of the role of CSOs in schools is to ensure quality education by advising teachers on the appropriate methods and resources for proper curriculum implementation. Being employees of TSC, they also prepare reports on a regular basis for the consumption of the county directors.
