A survey of Gender Relations Transformation in basic education has revealed that more women teach in primary schools than men.
The report titled “Gender Report 2024 what is the State of Gender Relations Transformation in Our basic education” by Usawa Agenda revealed that 56.6% of primary school teachers are women.
Though women were many in the schools, only 32.3% and 14.4% of the school heads and BoM chairpersons were women respectively.
In secondary schools, 41.8% of teachers are women but 33% and 15.7 % of the school heads and BoM chairpersons are women respectively.
Women are under-represented in the management of secondary schools except for girl schools where women are 66.7% of the school heads. However, in girls schools, only 28.4% of their BoM chairpersons are women.

The report also indicated that higher percentage of boys secondary schools (63.5%) had functional libraries compared to girls’ secondary schools at 46.6% and mixed secondary schools at 25.6%.
Higher percentage of girls’ secondary schools (31.4%) had libraries linked to online resources compared to boys secondary schools at 23.2% and mixed secondary at 10.1%
The report also revealed that 7.9% of the surveyed girls schools had at least one incident of children learning in the open, which was more than twice the percentage of boys schools at 3.5% with similar incidents.
It also detailed that 78.8% of boys secondary schools had adequate space for play field compared to 56.6% of girls schools.
Dr Emmanuel Manyasa, Executive Director Usawa Agenda, said the research was done in all the 47 counties.
Over 1,800 primary school head teachers and 1,317 secondary school principals were interviewed.
