Two boys accepted at Rapogi High with literally nothing

The two poor boys who reported to Rapogi High School with nothing, but were admitted nonetheless.

Two boys were accepted yesterday at St Joseph’s Rapogi High School in Migori County despite reporting for Form One with literally nothing.

The two students had no school fees, uniform, bedding and other accessories and were ready to learn if given a chance or sponsored by good Samaritans.

One of them had only one parent while the other was staying with the grandmother after their father and mother separated ten years ago.

But yesterday luck came calling when the principal Erastus Nyagwa, moved to tears, admitted them without reservations.

The boys; Philip Okindo, 14, and Maxwell Iragosa, 15, had expressed fears prior to opening that they might miss out on registration day as they had not yet raised the requisite Ksh62,000 fees, although Ksh22,440 would be paid by the government.

According to Nyagwa, Okindo’s mother Winnie Awuor pleaded for help, saying she had nothing.

“My husband Joseph Obadiah died in 2014, and I have to labour in people’s farms to feed my young family of three,” she had said amid sobs.

The son reported with a milk carton box. Inside it were Colgate toothpaste, bar soap and pens. He did not have any other personal effects – not even a blanket to cover himself, nor shoes on his feet.

Okindo, who wants to be a doctor, scored 380 marks while Iragosa, wishing to pursue Architecture, got 371.
