Opportunity for talented athletes to join top national school

Athletes line up for a competition. A rare chance has presented for 2023 KCPE candidates to join a national school on purely a sporting ticket.

 Opportunity presented last week for talented athletes to join a national school in the form of St. Patrick’s National School, which invited 2023 KCPE candidates for track interviews last week.

The school in Iten town, the Elgeyo-Marakwet County headquarters, is a hub of talent development both nationally and internationally. It has produced top athletes who have graced the global charts over the years.

The school Chief Principal Peter Rotich said the school is reputed for good performance in both academics and sport.

Interviews were conducted on Saturday January 13, 2023 starting 8:00am on the track at Tambach or Kamariny, even as they were required to carry copies of KCPE result slips, birth certificates and sports certificates.

Among the top schools in the 2023 KCSE, it had a mean  grade of 8.263 from an entry of 373 candidates, of whom  2 scored A plain, 41 A – , 60 B +, 70 B, 64 B – , 74 C+, 40 C, 19 C- and 3 D+.

Some of the alumni celebrity athletes are Matthew Birir (Olympic Gold Medalist and World Junior Champion), Michael Boit (Olympic Bronze Medalist), Kipkoech Cheruiyot ( World Junior record holder) Peter Rono (Olympic Gold Medalist) , Cornelius Chirchir ( World Junior record holder, World Junior and Youth Champion),  and Wilson Kipketer  (4 World Championships, 2 Olympic medals, multiple world records in 800 metres), among others.
