Don’t hide challenged children, pastoralists urged

By Amoto Dennis Ndiewo

Educationists in Garissa County have urged pastoralist parents to take their physically or mentally challenged children to school.
Led by Garissa KNUT Executive Secretary Abdirizak Hussein they accused some parents of hiding children with disabilities for fear of discrimination and stigmatisation. “Some of us are ashamed of our disabled children. The government should crack a whip on such parents through relevant authorities,’’ said Hussein.
Abdinassir Musa, an early childhood development expert and deputy head teacher of Tetu Primary school said some parents fail to take their children to school on the assumption they don’t need education.
“We want to make it crystal clear to such parents that every child has a right to education,’’ he said. The tutors discussed the issue at a meeting to cater for the needs of the challenged at a Garissa hotel.
They challenged all the leaders in the pastoralist counties to support the struggle.
