Relief as KNUT calls off teachers strike that was to start tomorrow

KNUT NEC has resolved unanimously to call off the strike they had scheduled for tomorrow, throwing into disarray KUPPET's plans to go ahead with it in an announcement it made earlier.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called off the teachers’ strike that they had scheduled to begin tomorrow, sending a collective sigh of relief across the country and government.

In a press statement released today signed by the Secretary General Collins Oyuu on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC), the union has called off the strike because of the government’s commitment to resolve the rest of the issues they had tabled.

“… NEC has therefore … agreed to withdraw the strike action notice which was elapsing midnight 25th August 2024 since we have commenced addressing the remaining matters administratively,” reads the statement that was released late this afternoon.

This implies that KUPPET, which had earlier today announced it will push on with the strike, will go it alone without neither its big brother KNUT, nor KUSNET, the younger sibling; the latter of which had instructed its members to report to work on Monday after TSC met all the three unions earlier in the week.

In the statement, KNUT enumerates all the demands they had placed before TSC, noting that the government had given them the cooperation they wanted by showing commitment to address the issues at hand.

“… having considered all options in the developments of these matters and the level of commitment by both the government, the employer (TSC) and the teachers’ position in driving the education agenda, (the union) has today directed the Secretary General to withdraw the strike notice,” read further the statement.

The statement also directed the members of the union to report to work tomorrow, meaning that only secondary schools might not reopen pending KUPPET taking the cue that KNUT has given.

KNUT held its meeting yesterday to deliberate on this matter, but withheld its resolution until today, which comes shortly after KUPPET announced its stand.
