The Abagusii Council of Elders has asked the youth to maintain peace during this Christian festival, Christmas, by avoiding unethical activities such as drug abuse and nighttime disturbances.

The Council’s General Secretary, Bosire Angwenyi, lamented that many youths in the region have lost their lives by committing suicide after consuming intoxicating drinks. He urged them to distance themselves from alcohol, as it impairs mental judgment and leaves them vulnerable to accidents.

Stating that the youth are the future leaders, Bosire encouraged them to choose role models from responsible adults who can help guide them in shaping their lives.

“We, as adults, learned from the right people when we were young. Let our youth follow positive examples and avoid those who mislead them,” he said.

He also advised those awaiting their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results to take short computer courses to enhance their skills rather than idling at home.

The Secretary thanked community groups and leaders, such as Mwanyagetinge Cultural Heritage and Ibeno Ward MCA Steve Arika, for their involvement in instilling indigenous knowledge in the youth through alternative rites of passage for girls and circumcision for boys.

“Education has undergone many changes, but some indigenous values remain intact in society. We should embrace these values and blend them with modern knowledge to benefit our growing children,” he said.

On road safety, the Secretary urged drivers and boda boda riders to be cautious while using the roads.

He called on traffic police to arrest any driver or boda boda operator found driving under the influence of alcohol and take them to court to face the law.

He attributed many accidents on the highways to careless driving, unserviced vehicles operating on the roads, and dishonest police officers who take bribes from reckless drivers instead of apprehending them.

He took the time to send his Christmas well-wishes to the community, calling for peace and unity to foster effective development.
