Parents in Nyamira and Kisii counties have been asked to be vigilant with their daughters during the just started two months holiday.

Sironga Girls’ High School teachers said they had taken care of the girls for most of the year and it was the parents’ turn to play their guardian roles.

“We have guided them well by giving them adequate instructions in both classwork and social conduct, now we return them to parents for reinforcement,” said Chief Principal Jane Nyanumba.

Nyanumba told parents to ensure they provide their daughters with essential needs, particularly sanitary towels, to reduce being taken advantage of by uncouth men eager to prey on them.

The Principal noted that most girls go astray when parents fail to create time and get to know them better.

“We urge parents to take advantage of this long holiday to be near their children by socializing with them,” teacher Lilian Kemunto said.

Matagaro SDA Church Pastor Martha Isaac cautioned parents against sending their children to stay with relatives, saying this exposes them to influences of drug abuse and peer pressure.

She asked fathers to be at the forefront in integrating both traditional and Christian values to guide the girls.

“The bible instructs parents to love their children by being role models in the very way African traditions emphasize on communal life. Let us integrate this for the welfare of our children,” she advised.

Pastor Martha asked the government to return the mandatory enrollment into the National Youth Service (NYS) for Form 4 leavers and the Kazi Mtaani initiative to keep the youth busy.

She added that her Church had introduced youth-friendly programmes tailored to instill Christian principles and mentor children on holiday, and asked parents to register their children.
