Schools in Bungoma County have benefited from a World Bank-funded project in which 46 classrooms and 42 laboratories have been constructed in 94 primary schools in a bid to bolster learning facilities in the County.

The World Bank has also funded sanitation improvement activities in the same schools.

The modern classrooms and laboratories will be constructed in secondary schools.

Speaking at Kipsis High School in Mt Elgon on Wednesday during the handing over of the new classrooms, Bungoma County Education director Pius Ng’oma lauded the initiative.

He thanked the World Bank and the Ministry of Education for selecting Bungoma County schools to benefit from the program.

In total nine new classrooms distributed in Kimabole Friends secondary school, Cheptais boys’ high school, and Kipsis secondary schools in Mt Elgon were handed over to the school for use.

Kimabole got two classrooms, Cheptais boys handed one while Kipsis got six classrooms.

The laboratories are at 90 percent to be completed.

He added that many schools in Bungoma were struggling with poor infrastructures to accommodate the huge population.

“This project is going to tackle classroom shortage in Bungoma schools,” he said.

Ng’oma pointed out that when the laboratories will be completed it will help boost the science performance in Bungoma adding that Schools in Mt Elgon face a lot of challenges due to its terrain.

Bungoma County Commissioner Thomas Sankei asked learners and school management to use the new classrooms prudently.

Adan Hassan, the contractor of the project said the sole purpose of the project is to improve school infrastructures to create a conducive environment in the region.

“We are glad that we have started handing over the classroom projects in three weeks’ time. We shall start handing over the laboratories,” he said.
