Every year, the world celebrates International Education Day on January 24 to mark the role of education in fostering peace and development.
This year’s theme is “AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation.”
The them highlights the surging impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation on education and the future workforce and also emphasizes the transformative power of education in enhancing social impact through personalised digital learning.
AI is reshaping educational landscapes, retaining the best practices of the past, combined with personalised digital learning, thus becoming an essential in addressing diverse student needs.
It was the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that “decided to mark this day to demonstrate the unwavering political will to support transformative actions for inclusive, equitable and quality education for all.”

Following the resolution, the first International Day of Education was observed on January 24, 2019.
As technology rapidly evolves, AI and automation are changing economies, industries, and how people live and work.
The integration of AI and automation technologies into education offers vital opportunities offer personalized educational pathways, to improve learning experiences and enhance teaching methods.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 3, 2018, through resolution and it aims to highlight the power of education in achieving global objectives and building a better future.
The day is celebrated on January 24 annually. Since 2018, the day has been embraced by 59 member states.
The annual celebrations are led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations (UN)’s education agency coordinates worldwide celebrations and educational activities.
