Mike Kiplagat Yator is an old boy from Simotwo Secondary School in Uasin Gishu County and an alumnus of Egerton University.

He started his illustrious teaching career at Liter Secondary School in Elgeyo Marakwet County, where he was posted on his first appointment. Despite the insecurity that characterized the area at the time, he was so excited to join the school, alluding that it was an opportunity to nurture talent, empower, and mentor students, as mentoring was later to become his second name.

He always stated that if he went to University despite the humble and challenging background that he went through in his formative stages of life, then he promised to change the fortunes of every child who came in contact with him during his teaching career.

An industrious person who was also a sports enthusiast, nurtured, trained, and mentored young athletes from Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The late also headed Kapchepkor Secondary in Baringo in his illustrious career.

He would be seen early mornings in Iten, training with elite athletes. Mike was equally an academic wizard who knew how to make the best of average students into University materials.

A number of students have joined the University through his mentorship and guidance, and others have joined universities abroad on sports scholarships courtesy of his networks. No wonder he was an official in the secondary school games association.

Yator always performed his roles diligently, with dedication and enthusiasm. He rose through the ranks to positions of deputy at Kipsoen Secondary in Keiyo North and later principal at Kipsaos Secondary in Keiyo South, and he went on to become Chief Principal of Nakuru High. Due to political interests beyond him, he was hounded out of the national school and posted to Kaplong Boys in Bomet.

Mike Kiplagat Yator is an old boy from Simotwo Secondary School.

As a testament to Mwalimu’s culture of excellent performance, Kipsaos Boys has remained a leading performer in the County, thanks to the track record built by the late Yator during his tenure there. He left a strong tradition that has lived beyond him.

Principal, as he is fondly known by many, has also been instrumental in church developments at his local AIC church in Iten and Kimwogo home.

He used any opportunity, despite his schedules, to empower learners of the local primary and secondary schools in Keiyo South and Keiyo North.

He took his mentees to Kimwogo home for a retreat during the just-ended mid-term break.

He was a professional and transformational teacher.

Rest in peace, Mwalimu Yator.
