Wetang’ula calls for policies to seal loopholes in bursaries administration

The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has called for significant reforms in education sector which include improved strategies for administering school bursaries.

Wetangula, who was speaking during a courtesy visit by a team of university scholars from Daystar University led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro on Wednesday, urged for development of proposals to address the pitfalls in the current state of education in Kenya.

A key issue highlighted was the alarming loss of bursary funds, with up to 60% reportedly disappearing due to theft.

“We need to consolidate these resources to better support our students,” said the Speaker.

The speaker challenged education stakeholders to develop a policy that effectively tackles the hurdle to ensure deserving students benefit from the resources.

He acknowledged the critical role educational institutions, particularly universities, play in transforming the nation.

“I urge Prof. Ayiro to ensure that institutions like Daystar take the lead in addressing Kenya’s most pressing issues and share the irreducible minimums for genuine progress,” he said.

Additionally, the Speaker underscored the necessity for universities to combat the proliferation of fake academic papers, which he said undermines the integrity of the education sector.
