Western region emerged the overall winner in the just concluded Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) Brookside Term One games, as Rift Valley and Nyanza took positions two and three respectively.
Dr Aggrey High School from the Coast Region emerged the champions in boys basketball held at various venues in Machakos. The agile boys beat Agoro Sare from Nyanza 56-54 in a hotly contested match at Machakos School.
In basketball girls, reigning champions Butere Girls retained their title after dismissing Nairobi’s Buruburu Girls 49-43.
Moi Girls Kamusinga easily dismantled home girls Kwanthanze 24-14 in handball, while St Luke Kimilili from Western beat defending champions Hospital Hill 21-15 in matches played on wet and slippery grounds following heavy rainfall.
In Rugby 15s, All Saints from Eastern stunned defending champions Butula 12-10.
Western region took the hockey trophies after Tigoi Girls saw off Nyamira from Nyanza 2-1 and Musingu overpowered St Anthony Boys 3-2.
The games showcased a host of talent from hundreds of participants across six disciplines. These were basketball, hockey, rugby 15s, athletics, swimming and handball in a national sports extravaganza that brought together teams from the eight regions of Kenya and lasted six days.
KSSSA Chairman Kipchumba Maiyo, who is also the Chief Principal Kapsabet Boys’ High School, termed the championships as an opportunity to showcase talents, unify the nation and inspire solidarity among all participants.
Maiyo said the winners will represent the country in Jinja, Uganda, later in the year, thanking the host, Machakos County, for good organization and hospitality.
Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, who officially opened and closed the competitions, thanked the participants for exhibiting sportsmanship and high levels of discipline during the competitions.
“All of us are winners having competed from the regional level to the national stage. Congratulations!” said Mwangangi, adding that education and sports are a priority for any country that wishes to develop and thanked Brookside for supporting the event while welcoming more corporates to come on board.
