West Pokot County Government has confirmed 1012 teachers as permanent and pensionable employees as promised yesterday in a ceremony that was attended by well over 1,600 teachers serving in various capacities in different ECDE centres across the county.
During the event conducted at the governor’s official residence in Kapenguria, 481 other teachers were put on contracts while 110 were asked to get their certificates before being contracted.
Speaking to the teachers and other stakeholders, the governor thanked the teachers for their patience and their dedication in serving ECDE learners, asking them to redouble their efforts to appreciate the gesture.
The salary scales awarded to the teachers are as follows:
- Certificate in ECDE- 16,000
- Diploma in ECDE- 19,200
- Degree in ECDE- 26,900
- Coordinators – 54,000
However, teachers interviewed on condition of anonymity questioned the criteria that was used to award the pay packages and outlined that they had expected payment according to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) advisories.
They stated that certificate owners were expecting 33,000, diploma holders 36,000, while those with a Degree 59,000.
They said they expect the disparity between what they had been awarded and what is legally theirs to be corrected in the coming days, failure to which their morale will be compromised.
