The Kenya National Union of Teachers, (KNUT) has indicated its intention to engage the government regarding the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Speaking after meeting teachers in Murkan, Narok County, First National vice Chair Malel Langat said the union is prepared for talks, stating that the CBA must be monetary unlike the previous ones.
Malel said that they are currently monitoring the implementation of the second phase of the 2021/2024 CBA.
Some of the items he says the Union is keen on include; leave, acting, and hardship allowances for Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) teachers serving in hardship areas.
“We have a lot of non-monetary issues. Leave allowance should be based on one’s grade and not basic salary. Going forward, we also want teachers in acting positions paid acting allowance,” he noted.
Malel, who is a member of the committee spearheading the CBA, said principals at Comprehensive Schools, most of whom are without portfolios, must be compensated and paid a salary commensurate with their duties.
“We have many ASAL areas, like here in Trans Mara, and teachers in these areas work without hardship allowances. We are collecting views and I want to assure teachers across the country that we will work and ensure that we have the best Collective Bargaining Agreement,” he said.
