Visually challenged student in Thika shines bright, bags top grade in KCSE exams

A visually impaired learner at The Salvation Army Thika High School, Levy Kebasa, managed to be among best students in the republic by scoring a straight A grade in KCSE 2024.

According to the school’s Principal, Lydia Karanja, teachers have tirelessly worked hard with learners to post commendable results.

She confirmed that Kebasa has been going through a lot of challenges especially after losing sight while at Moi Gesusu Secondary where he got admitted to Sabatia Eyes Hospital.

Rehabilitation

He was then taken to the Kenya Institute of The Blind for rehabilitation; it’s after that, that he was enrolled at Thika High School in Form Two.

The Principal confirmed that Kebasa comes from a family of five, his mother and father are jobless and live under very deplorable conditions.

The teachers have played a very significant role to provide him with personal effects and even fare until Kenya Pipeline sponsored him to realise his dreams.

According to the class teacher, Grace Wambugu, the student is a very obedient, focused, self-driven and resilient and was always ready to share his knowledge with classmates.

More than 40 students attained university entry mark of C+ and above and Kebasa is certainly a great inspiration to all the learners.

Kebasa would wish to pursue Law and has been greatly inspired by Isaac Mwaura, Senior Counsel James Orengo, Danstan Omari and his teachers who have always been there for him.

He scored 353 marks in KCPE at Kegogi Primary School in Nyamira.

The Deputy Principal Dr Julia Keitany has described Kebasa as a very disciplined student. She stated that discipline and success go hand in hand.
