Varsity students invent robot that detects explosives

Technical University of Mombasa.

Two students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) have developed an innovative robot to assist in the fight against terrorism by detecting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Bramwel Ongori and Ana Mabonga, both fourth year Electrical and Electronics Engineering students, created the remote-controlled robot car, which can be deployed as the lead vehicle in military convoys or patrols.

The robot is designed to detect hidden explosives, reducing the risk to human lives. If the device fails to detect an IED, it can be used as a sacrificial unit, deliberately driving over the explosive and absorbing the impact to protect soldiers or civilians in the convoy.

The two students said their inspiration came from the tragic loss of lives witnessed in Lamu, where Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed by IEDS while on duty.

The robot is seen as a solution to prevent similar tragedies in the future, contributing to safer operations in regions prone to terrorism.

This innovation offers a crucial tool in enhancing security and saving lives, providing a practical and cost-effective solution for combating threats posed by explosives.
