UoN features in Times Higher Education global subject rankings

The University of Nairobi has been ranked among top universities in the just released Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2025.

The institution becomes Kenya’s only ranked institution the world rankings.

The university has demonstrated strength across three vital academic disciplines: Medicine and Health, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences showcasing its commitment to world-class education, innovation and research.

It secured a position in the 501-600 brackets for Medicine and Health, competing with 1,150 institutions worldwide.

In a statement, the university indicated that the ranking reflects the university’s robust medical education framework and research capabilities, evaluated against 18 comprehensive indicators across disciplines including medicine, dentistry, and nursing.

The Life Sciences category saw the University positioning itself in the 801-1000 range, competing against 1,143 global institutions.

The ranking encompasses crucial fields such as Agriculture, Forestry, Veterinary Science, and Biological Sciences, underscoring the university’s dedication to advancing sustainable development and life science research in Africa.

While the Physical Sciences category placed UoN in the 1000+ band, this inclusion marks a significant milestone in the university’s journey toward excellence in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and environmental sciences.

The recognition validates UoN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its scientific research and educational programs.

The rankings employ a sophisticated evaluation methodology centered on five fundamental pillars: Teaching Excellence, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry Partnerships, and International Outlook. These metrics provide a comprehensive assessment of institutional performance across 11 distinct subject areas.

Despite facing a slight decline in its overall global standing, moving from the 1201-1500 band in 2024 to the 1501+ category in 2025, UoN’s subject-specific achievements highlight its strategic focus on developing specialized academic strengths. This targeted approach mirrors successful strategies employed by leading institutions worldwide, where subject-specific excellence often precedes overall ranking improvements.

The University of Nairobi’s performance in the subject rankings reinforces its position as a vital contributor to Africa’s higher education sector.
