Northwestern Christian University, which awarded Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi an honorary doctorate in December 2024, is under scrutiny following the arrest of two officials for allegedly running an illegal institution.
Detectives arrested Chancellor Moses Masiga and Vice-Chancellor Jackson Khayamba during a graduation ceremony at Wild Waters in Nyali.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that the officials were caught issuing degrees from a non-accredited institution.
During the operation, detectives seized numerous fake certificates, including honorary and academic doctorate degrees, master’s and bachelor’s degrees, diplomas, and other certifications intended for unsuspecting graduates.

In 2023, the Commission for University Education (CUE) had already flagged the university as one of 13 institutions illegally offering degrees in Kenya and warned against enrollment.
Despite this, Sudi received an honorary doctorate in Leadership, Administration, and Management during a ceremony that also honored MPs John Waluke and Didmus Barasa.
Skepticism grew when the university referred to Sudi as an engineer, a claim dismissed by the Institution of Engineers of Kenya as the title requires years of training.
Investigations continue as concerns remain about how the university could grant degrees despite prior warnings from regulatory authorities.
