Elgeyo Marakwet County has signed an MoU with the University of Eldoret that will see the university offer medical training in the county.
Research and Academic Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Phillip Raburu said public facilities have modern equipment that are fit for training.
Speaking after signing the MoU, he observed that they are starting with Bachelor of Nursing before introducing the other courses.
“We are starting a School of Health and Nursing which is going to be the first one and the county will benefit a lot. Many nurses may need upgrading and through this MOU, they will get first priority,” he said.

According to him, the county will greatly benefit, since the already serving nurses will have a chance to upgrade with ease.
Raburu disclosed that the university also intends to introduce Sports Health in the region, a move he said will benefit athletes and those interested in taking sports health.
“We are lining up some programmes which are basically geared towards sports health both for young people who are not interested in academics and even those who are interested in taking courses in Sports Health. This will also support our athletes because currently in Kenya we do not have any hospital doing courses related to sports,” added Raburu.
Four facilities at the sub-counties have been selected to start the nursing programme, as the Iten County Referral Hospital becomes the main training hospital.
A visit to 10 hospitals in the region established that the facilities had adequate equipment, staff and drugs, with patients being attended to on time.
