Union officials in Kisumu angered by arbitrary postponement of term dates

David Obuon, KNUT's Kisumu Executive Secretary. He wondered how the government could make such an arbitrary decision.

Teacher unions in Kisumu County have censured the Ministry of Education for postponing the reopening of schools at the last minute.

The officials said it was illogical for the government to take such a move on the very day students were already reporting to their respective learning institutions across the country.

KNUT’s Kisumu City Executive Secretary David Obuon questioned the wisdom on the part of the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to announce it on Sunday night.

Obuon said the move was a major blow to some schools that had even prepared meals for the students.

The official said some students had already reported to school when the surprise announcement was made.

Obuon said many learners and parents and even schools have been affected by the rash decision.

His Nyando counterpart Ephraim Kananga equally blamed the education ministry for the action taken at the last minute, blaming Machogu for making kneejerk decisions.

He said the CS should desist from making reactionary decisions at the expense of students and parents.

Elsewhere, KUPPET Kisumu branch Executive Secretary Zablon Awange also welcomed the decision.

He said many learning institutions have been submerged in floods due to heavy rains.

Awange, however, said it should have been made earlier to allow learners and parents together with teachers to prepare.

Machogu made the announcement on Monday morning to the surprise of many Kenyans.
