Two university students Sharon Nanjala Anyango, 26, and Tobias Ngala Wekesa, 23 were arrested on Monday January 27 in Bungoma attempting to extort money from public officials and citizens.
The duos have been impersonating senior officials of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to obtain money by false pretences.
EACC CEO Abdi Mahamud, in a statement said that the duo allegedly posed as EACC directors and claimed they had the power to stop ongoing corruption cases in exchange for money.
Following a complaint by local government officials yesterday, the Commission conducted an operation to search for the students and they were apprehended.

Wekesa, a third-year student at Kibabii University posed himself as the Director in charge of the EACC in Kakamega County while Anyango, identified herself as a senior Director based in Nairobi. It is reported that Anyango graduated from Kibabii University last year.
The students had visited a CDF office in Bungoma County to allegedly conduct official investigations into the ongoing projects. Joyce Mumelo, a government official then quickly contacted EACC who launched an operation to have the two arrested.

“The duo had raided a National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) office, claiming they were conducting an official investigation into ongoing projects. During the raid, they demanded a bribe of KSh150,000 from the complainants, promising to halt the investigation and “forgive” them,” reads part of the statement.
The suspects are currently held in custody at the EACC’s Western Regional Offices in Bungoma, where they are being interviewed and having their statements recorded as part of ongoing investigations.
