Two Form 2 students have been arrested for allegedly starting a fire that razed down a dormitory at Nyayo Girls High School on Sunday night.
The devastating fire tore through the dormitory, housing 146 students to ashes, forcing them to sleep inside classrooms.
The scene was one of chaos and despair as the fire, which started at around 8:25 in the night, rapidly engulfed the entire dormitory.
Area police have launched a full-scale investigation.
This incident is the latest in a series of dormitory fires that have plagued schools across Machakos, Makueni, and Kitui counties.

Sources suggest that these fires may be a consequence of the growing frustrations among students due to the ongoing KUPPET teachers’ strike, which has disrupted learning and created a tense atmosphere in many schools.
Among the schools that have been closed include; Makindu boys, Kaumoni boys, Ngoto boys, Mwaani boys, Ukia girls, Mukaa boys, Mnuvo secondary school, Yemukwa secondary school, ACK St. Joseph Maaueli high school, and Kambimawe secondary among others.
