Two pupils of Lupida Primary School in Nambale Sub-county, Busia, have drowned in a quarry they were swimming in at Khwilare ‘A’, Walatsi Location.
The two; Joel Odongo aged 9 years and Steven Wechuli aged 8 were swimming in a pool in the evening after leaving school when they drowned.
It took more than twelve hours for the locals to retrieve their bodies, which were later taken to Kocholya Hospital mortuary by Nambale police officers.
The locals led by Frankline Osang’ir have called on the government to ensure all open quarries in the area are filled up, decrying increasing cases of deaths in the quarries that were left open after excavation of murram by contractors.
“This is not the first time we are losing lives; several other children have died in the quarries but nothing is done. We want the government to ensure all the quarries in this area are filled up to avert further tragedies.
