The Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institute principals have called upon the Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Migos Ogamba to follow up on the promise to allocate 500 slots for internship to TVET graduates by the public service.
This was said by David Mwangi, Principal at Nyeri National Polytechnic and national party chairman of TVET principals during the 5th graduation ceremony of Kabete National Polytechnic where the cabinet secretary had graced the occasion.
“Last year we had an opportunity to talk to the public service and they said that they will give 500 slots for internship for TVET graduates but unfortunately when they advertised this year, it was not part of the advert,’ Mwangi said.
He called on the CS to follow up so that TVETS can unleash an onslaught regarding the internship.
He said that in the new funding model, an area of interest is the upkeep of TVET students, who are requesting that they be given upkeep equivalent to that of university students.
“The students are staying and living in the same environment so that the most needy TVET students just like the university students can go home with Ksh60,000 in a year while the less needy Ksh45,000,” he said.
In response, the CS said that to ensure that all trainees have fair opportunities and access to TVET training the government rolled out the student-centred funding model for higher education which funds trainees based on their level of need.

“The model is designed to ensure that no one is left behind in the acquisition of relevant skills and training. We are confident that once the initial and formative roll out is addressed, the funding model will enhance equity and access to tertiary education,” the CS said.
He said that the funding model will be improved regularly as it will guarantee the sustainability of institutions and ensure that no deserving student is locked out of higher education.
“The issues that the chairman raised are already being taken care of to ensure that we rationalize the funding model so that it is fit for purpose and ensure that no student whether in TVET or university is left out for lack of resources when they deserve to get the training,” he said.
