Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has stated that there is no policy guidelines currently in place for promotion of those teachers on contract.
Responding to a request by Senator Esther Okenyuri who wanted to know how teachers on contract are to progress, the commission secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Nancy Macharia stated that the teachers already reached higher grades during their time in the service.
According to TSC, such contracts only extend for a period of 3 years or upon attainment of 65 years.
“The commission strictly engages only retired teachers on contract. Such contracts are for a period of three years or attainment of age 65 years, whichever comes first. Noting the short period of the contract and the fact that teachers had already attained their highest grade prior to retirement, the commission has no policy in place tailored for their career progression,” said Dr Macharia in the statement.
As per TSC, it has placed on contract a total of 383 teachers in Garissa (138), Lamu(16), Mandera (107), and Wajir (122).
