TSC says retraining of teachers will be a continuous process to meet CBC demands

Alex Cheruiyot, Rift Valley Regional Director. He has said retraining of teachers will be continuous to meet the demands of CBC.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will continue retraining teachers regularly to measure up to the demands of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

This was said by the Rift Valley TSC Regional Coordinator Alex Cheruiyot during a training of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in a Nakuru hotel.

In his remarks, Cheruiyot said teachers need to be equipped with skills to handle the changing dynamics as the country moves towards fully implementing the CBC curriculum.

He pointed out that the CBC requires innovativeness and creativity if the delivery has to be effective, and so TSC is committed to supporting teachers in ICT integration so that they can effectively source for and develop teaching aids and learning materials.

A total of 9,595 teachers are undergoing the training on expectations of the CBC, with Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) being the organizer.

The programme is set to continue every April holidays.

The director said that the country’s education system is currently on a reform path, adding that Kenya has been making strides in providing quality education as both a constitutional right and a roadmap to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG).

“It is important to put emphasis on the teachers’ professional knowledge, engagement in the teaching service and effective curriculum implementation to ensure the acquisition of competencies, skills, values, and attitudes for effective CBC implementation and assessment,” Cheruiyot said, adding that teachers must keep pace with technology as it is hard to separate what they teach from digitization.
