In a major announcement that is poised to impact the education sector, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr Nancy Macharia has announced plans to promote teachers and convert 46,000 interns to permanent and pensionable terms.
The announcement came on the eve of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, highlighting the governments renewed focus supporting educators and strengthening the sector.
Speaking in Mombasa where she had joined senior Ministry of Education (MoE) officials led by Principal Secretary (PS)Belio Kipsang’ to oversee the dispatch of the first KCSE exam papers, Macharia emphasized that the government has allocated Ksh1 billion to fund this transformative initiative.

This significant financial commitment is part of a broader efforts to enhance job security, improve teacher morale, and solidify the foundation of the education system.
“The promotion and conversion of our hardworking intern teachers into permanent and pensionable terms is a step toward ensuring stability in our teaching work force,” said Macharia. “We recognize the indispensable role teachers play in shaping the future of our nation, and this investment affirms our commitment to their welfare.”
The conversion plan is expected to bring relief to the thousands of intern teachers who have long sought stable employment and pension benefits. By bolstering the teaching ranks with permanent roles, the TSC aims to reduce turnover and reinforce the quality of education delivered in schools across Kenya.
