TSC awarded Ksh316B in 2023/24 Budget allocation

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been allocated Ksh316.7 billion – half of the Ksh628.6 billion allocated towards the education sector in the 2023/24 Budget presented yesterday by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Njuguna Ndung’u.

TSC has also been allocated Ksh4.8 billion for the recruitment of 20, 000 intern teachers and Ksh1.3 billion for training teachers on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Further, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will receive Ksh5 billion to manage national examinations while the Free Primary and Secondary Education programme will receive Ksh77.8 billion.

Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), Primary and Secondary schools will receive Ksh25.5 billion in capitation funds with an extra Ksh6 billion for infrastructure development.

The allocation to the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has been doubled from Ksh15 billion to Ksh30.3 billion while University education will receive Ksh97.5 billion.

Ksh400 million has been allocated to the Digital Literacy Programme and ICT Integration in Secondary Schools.

Prof. Ndung’u further allocated Ksh749 million for research, science, technology and innovation.

The Government has, since assumption of office, improved education by employing over 30, 000 teachers in a historic and unprecedented move to improve the national teacher to pupil ratio and enhance performance.

A new funding model was also introduced for higher education that will make the universities and TVET institutions financially self-sufficient and capable of competing with peers globally while contributing to national socioeconomic transformation.

Furthermore, it established the National Open University which will receive its Charter this month.
