The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has effected some changes of its field directors to open the New Year.

The movements involve a new appointment and a few transfers of the officials to new stations.

Those affected include Erick Magak who has now been named the new Nyamira County Director replacing Catherine Mwenda who has been deployed to Nyeri in similar capacity.

Mwenda reports to the station taking over from George Thuo who leaves office to pursue personal interests.

Education News has learnt that Thuo who has barely lasted a year at his station as a newly appointed director, has declined the offer by TSC to renew his contract out of personal will.

Several directors who spoke to Education News in confidence termed his decision brave and unprecedented. Others hailed him as a courageous man who never kowtowed ‘unnecessary intimidation from his seniors at the TSC headquarters’.

The directors did not disclose the said officers accused of mistreating field staff.

Also affected by the changes is George Ekeno Kapus who leaves Kisii County as Deputy Director to land in Vihiga in similar capacity.

Kapus will replace Magak who has gone to Nyamira. It was not immediately clear who replaced Kapus in Kisii.

Education News has further learnt that several changes are expected soon to replace a good number of field directors expected to retire after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Information available within TSC circles indicates directors overseeing Kisii, Kilifi, Siaya and Isiolo would be retiring from office anytime from now.

Also leaving office on retirement grounds are Regional Directors in Western, Rift Valley and Nairobi.

It is further understood that the Nyanza Regional Director’s seat will fall vacant if the current impasse surrounding the appointment of Jane Njage as a Commissioner at the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) is resolved.

Njage was selected as the TSC’s nominee to SRC to represent the interests of teachers at the Salaries body, but some internal technical issues are still holding her appointment.
