Tom Mboya University (TMU) in Homa Bay has grown from a modest beginning into a prestigious academic hub. The university’s vice chancellor (VC), Prof Charles Ochola, attributes its constant growth and development; from a constituent college of Maseno University into a fully pledged university seven years ago, to its good network of roads and proximity to Homa Bay town that provides the readily available shopping needs and extra accommodation for students.
Prof Ochola hailed the government for providing sufficient funds and other resources to renovate and build the university and transform it from a neglected labour college to a modern institution of higher learning.
The University is named after one of the pioneer trade unionists, academic enthusiasts, and politicians, Tom Mboya.
The professor said that the university has expanded and accommodates over 800 in more than 39 disciplines offered at the campus.
When Education News visited the institution, the principal briefed the team that the government has invested over KSh1.5 billion in the institution to give it a facelift and achieve its aspired academic goals, producing the relevant labour force suited to the delivery and sustainability of the country’s Vision 2030.

“We co-exist and work well with the community except for some isolated cases like the recent misfortune that befell us as we lost one student as a result from beating and torture by hotel attendants over mistaken identity,” he said.

He assured the continuing students, those who will join the institution, and parents and their guardians of their security at the university.
He thanked the area security team led by County Commissioner Moses Lelan for continued security and amicable interaction with students who felt at home away from their different homes in the country.
Prof Ochola maintained that the university is constantly researching the introduction of courses that will lead to the proper utilization of the aquatic environment in the region and use it to create more job opportunities to solve the teething unemployment problem in the country.
