Thousands of litres of busaa, chang’aa destroyed in Kisii

A past crackdown on illicit brew.

More than 4000 litres of busaa and 10 litres of Chang’aa were destroyed during a police raid led by Rise Sub location Assistant Chief Ruth Arisa in Sameta Sub-county.

Speaking to the public on Monday July 1 after the successful crackdown, Arisa called on the residents to report those who prepare illegal liquor and sell to the youth because it contributes to teenage pregnancies and high rate of school dropouts.

She revealed that after pouring down the illegal brew, the police and the community policing groups helped in the destruction of the containers used in the preparation by burning them openly.

She provided an amnesty of three months to the brewers of the stuff in the area promising that those who will volunteer and confess in her office will be advised on how to engage in other legal and profitable businesses other than selling the prohibited beer.

Mothers from the region who spoke to Education News said their husbands of being ruined by illicit liquor as they absconded and abdicated their matrimonial duties.

“My husband comes to the house and throws himself into bed like a log without turning until morning,” middle aged woman claimed who did not want to be named.

“Excessive drinking of chang’aa has ruined the youth here who have started stealing chicken from villages to sell and get my money to buy the staff,” complained David Ogega.

Clan elders promised to continue with frequent raids of chang’aa dens in the sub location but asked for protection and reinforcement from the police for their security.
