There was no fire during Mumbuni Boys unrest, asserts county official

It is reported that students threw stones during a brief unrest on Friday, injuring some of them, but there was no fire as claimed on social media.

Machakos County executive for Agriculture Catherine Mutanu has set the record straight regarding rumours of a fire at Mumbuni Boys High School.

Mutanu made the clarification while addressing the press during a visit to the school, contrary to alarming claims on social media on Friday night.

She acknowledged that while there had been an episode of unrest among the students on Friday evening, the situation was swiftly brought under control.

She explained that a group of students had become unruly, demanding to go home, and resorted to throwing stones, which resulted in broken windows.

“There was no fire at Mumbuni Boys,” Mutanu asserted firmly. “Yes, there was some disturbance as the boys wanted to go home and began causing a commotion, but everything has been resolved, and calm has been restored.”

Earlier in the day, Mutanu had attended a meeting of the Mumbuni Old School Association, during which she helped launch a fund to support needy students.

Reflecting on her personal connection to the school, Mutanu emphasized her commitment to maintaining peace at the institution.

“As a parent at Mumbuni Boys myself, I want to dispel any fears that something drastic has happened,” she said. “We had a successful alumni meeting during the day, and although there was unrest in the evening, it’s now under control. I urge parents to stay calm.”

The situation briefly escalated, with some students attempting to flee the premises. A roll call conducted afterward revealed that a few students had already left. Mutanu appealed to parents whose sons had contacted them to urge their children to return to school.

“We ask parents to encourage their boys to return and assure them that everything is safe,” she added.

Two students suffered minor injuries after being struck by stones thrown during the chaos but were treated and are in stable condition.
