As the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) continues to gain full space in our schools, it is evident that a critical step in curriculum development was given minimal attention.
Throughout the year, there has been unending calls by parents and other major stakeholders to be helped to understand fully competency-based education. Parents particularly have been raising concerns on progression of their children. Some have come out strongly to voice their concern on their involvement in their extended learning at home. The perception that this form of education is expensive compared to 8-4-4 has continued to surface in many parental meetings.
The challenges facing CBE are further fuelled by some political leaders who continue telling the government to revert back to 8-4-4. This makes the common mwananchi cast aspersions on the future of their children.
One of the crucial steps in curriculum development is sensitization of the key stakeholders, which here includes teachers, education officers, parents and religious groups. It is important that these stakeholders are fully sensitized. Parents and teachers alike must fully comprehend what a new education system has for their children.

Sensitization of the stakeholders should be given enough time. Sensitization should be handled by a team of well-equipped personnel who will be able to dispel myths directed at the new curriculum. Dissemination of curriculum content should be done in all available avenues, including the media.
Kenya being a religious nation, it is incumbent upon the ministry of education to encourage continued CBC sensitization through church gatherings and other available gatherings. It is disheartening to continue hearing voices of dissent years after CBE rollout.
As CBE knocks at doors of our Senior School, MoE should think of stepping up sensitization programmes that will wipe out the incessant cries for lack of enough information on the new curriculum.
