In the letter dated September 20, 2024 and signed by 40 Executive Secretaries, the branch bosses pointed out that the National Treasurer Mwithi Njenga had stated that the union has not been remitting their pension to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) after the commission refused to accept the contributions.
This, as per the letter, made the union to open a pension account where the money is being kept, a decision that was made without the knowledge of the Executive Secretaries who are the owner of the contribution; and further Ksh34 million being loaned to KUPPET Solidarity Sacco.
“We the undersigned branch Executive Secretaries having raised questions on the position and whereabouts of the pension money of KUPPET Executive Secretaries, the following have come to the notice of the Executive Secretaries raising fears of mismanagement of the very important fund,” reads the letter, which was also copied to the Principal Secretaries in the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, and National Treasury, Registrar of Trade Unions, Director of Pension, TSC Secretary and CEO Dr Nancy Macharia, and KUPPET National Chairman Omboko Milemba.

“The National Treasurer Mr Njenga Mwithi stated that KUPPET has not been remitting pension money to TSC. That TSC refused to be accepting pension money monthly remittance. That the union opened a pension account where the money is kept. This was done without the knowledge of the Executive Secretaries (owner of the contribution) undersigned. That Ksh34M was loaned to KUPPET Solidarity Sacco,” the letter added.
The unionists now demand for clarification on which bank the said pension account is operated and the exact account number, the total amount the said account has accumulated as at September 1, 2024, and the amount of money left in the said account after Ksh34 million was loaned to KUPPET Solidarity Sacco.
Further, the branch bosses want to be vanished with physical financial statements for all members so that they can own the statement and peruse it, and also the total amount in form of interest that the Ksh34 million has generated and how the owner of the contributions stands to benefit.
This comes shortly after the union had a tension-packed National Governing Council’s (NGC) meeting last Friday, from which Education News cannot independently verify whether the matter was exhaustively discussed and a resolution reached as per the wish of the Executive Secretaries.
