Teachers under KUPPET defy court orders and continue with strike

KUPPET Kisumu Executive Secretary Zablon Awange speaks to the press in the course of the strike. They vowed not to back down until their demands are met.

Post-secondary school teachers in Kisumu have defied court orders suspending their strike and instead took to the streets protesting over unfulfilled demands.

The teachers under their umbrella union the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) marched along the streets of Kisumu and vowed to continue fighting for their rights.

The teachers gather to strategize as they pushed their agenda. They said they take orders from their leaders, not courts.

Led by the Executive Secretary Zablon Awange, the group marched from Kondele towards the central business district.

Awange said court orders will not cow them into going back to class, saying they take instructions only from their union leaders and not courts.

Awange said negotiation processes had begun and called on the teams to work harder.

The teachers carried placards and blew whistles as they marched along the streets of Kisumu.

Awange who led the striking teachers said they were going for nothing other than what was due to them, warning the national officials not to succumb to pressures to withdraw the industrial action.

He said they will monitor those who go back to classes.

“No cheque no chalk,” they said at the Jamhuri gardens where they converged.
