Teachers in Nakuru occupy city streets with a 9-point agenda

Teachers demonstrating in Nakuru City streets yesterday. They had a nine-point agenda that they want TSC to look into before going back to class.

Teachers in Nakuru affiliated to KUPPET criss-crossed the city yesterday chanting anti-TSC songs as they demanded the implementation of their nine-point agenda.

On that third day of the teachers strike, business was interrupted in some parts of the town as traders and residents closed shop for safety and also to watch the spectacle.

The KUPPET procession, which began at Nyayo Garden, passed through Kenyatta Avenue towards Rift Valley  Regional Headquarters, the building that hosts both Rift Valley  Regional and Nakuru County TSC offices.

The teachers blocked the gate, demanding to be addressed by commission officers. An attempt by security officers to convince them to give way for other Kenyans to enter and get government services they were seeking fell on deaf ears.

Teachers under KUPPET defy court orders and continue with strike

As drama between teachers and security offices continued to attract the attention of passersby and the public, police officers lurked within sight ready to swing into action on any trigger until one of their leaders dismissed the teachers.

“We are teachers who respect the laws and regulations governing picketing and demonstration. We requested for a permit from the police to hold street demonstrations between 10.00AM to 1.00PM. Let’s stop right now and proceed with the demonstrations tomorrow,” said Nakuru County KUPPET chairperson Simon Mwaita, requiring the teachers to disperse.

While addressing the media shortly afterwards, their Executive Secretary Duncan Macharia said the strike will continue until TSC listens. He demanded that TSC respects the court order to convert JSS teachers to permanent terms before they can respect their own order to go back to class.

“No teacher will go to school in all 11 sub-counties of Nakuru County. We inform parents not to take their children to school because there will be no teacher there,” he added.
