Teachers across Embu County have been urged not to report to school on Monday, August 26, in response to the failed talks between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) yesterday.
In a joint press conference led by Embu KUPPET Executive Secretary Rodgers Murimi and KNUT Executive Secretary Josphat Kathumi, the teachers complained of chronic understaffing in area schools which had resulted to heavy workloads for current tutors.
They also expressed frustration over the stagnation of teachers in the same job group for years.
Murimi decried the failure by TSC to remit third-party contributions despite regular monthly deductions, failure to hire intern teachers permanently and delayed release of pension monies to retired teachers.
He further demanded that the government addresses the challenges surrounding the medical cover for teachers.
“Teachers cannot access medical cover due to incompetence of the medical cover provider,” he noted.
Kathumi said that the teachers who will go to school on Monday will be treated as traitors calling on all teachers to ensure they stay focused to their demands.
