A teacher at Moruga Secondary School in Trinidad and Tobago is recuperating after being physically assaulted by a student. The violent altercation erupted in the school’s auditorium on Friday January 17.
The altercation was recorded on cellphones by learners and several videos has been circulating on social media.
The photos show physical confrontation between a male teacher and a male student, exchanging blows. The teacher suistained injuries on the face with blood running down his nose. It is reported that students and staff tried to intervene.
According to reports, the teacher tried to intervene in a scuffle between two male students, and one of them turned on him.
The teacher was overwhelmed by the student and was struck several times before the situation was brought under control.
Minister of Education Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly has confirmed that the student involved will be suspended.
Responding to one of the media houses he said, “A preliminary report was submitted. A more detailed report has been requested and will be submitted early next week. A police investigation is also ongoing. The student will be suspended.”
He added, “Further action would be determined based on subsequent reports and a full investigation.”
South Wayne Mystar, assistant commissioner of Police has confirmed that the police are actively investigating the incident.
“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated. We will be conducting a thorough investigation into this matter,” he said.

The police said that teacher was treated at San Fernando General Hospital and discharged late on January 17.
The police are expected to visit the school tomorrow to gather more evidence.
