An association that represents teachers who are teaching in arid and semi-arid land areas (ASAL) and hardship areas, the Kenya Teachers in Hardship and Arid Areas Welfare Association (KETHAWA) has supported the recent move by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) to call for a strike.
The Association’s National Secretary Wangonya Wangenye stated that the union has a right to go on strike if the government fails to honour its side of the bargain through implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed between the teacher unions and their employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
“We cannot have a regime that is only good in giving promises and lip services but when it comes to implementation they drag their feet. The Kenya Kwanza government must honour their part of bargain and implement the CBA without further delay and without altering even a comma of the agreement,” said Wangenye.

He observed that the Association shall be in front line in the strike until all the demands are met and ready to offer legal assistance to all teachers who are likely to face any challenges during the strike.
“We have seen politicians show-casing their opulence and bragging of hundreds of millions of wealth and riches they owe but when it comes to teachers they have to beg even for peanuts that rightfully belongs to them,” said Wangenye.
“We also demand that the government immediately employ JSS teachers on permanent and pensionable basis and they be included in the current CBA. The never ending promises of JSS teachers confirmation should immediately come to an end and real tangible results be seen,” he added.
