Makueni County Conservator Martin Mutie has called upon the community and leaders to continue sensitizing children on the importance of planting trees from their young age.
Speaking during World Forest Day at Makongo Forest where the event was held bringing together students from Mwea Vocational Training Centre and several other primary schools including the Makongo Special Needs School and residents, Mutie revealed that 50,000 trees were planted in schools, churches, chiefs offices, private lands among others.
Makueni CECM Lands, Urban Planning & Development, Environment and Climate Change Nicholus Nzioka reiterated on sensitising children at home, clubs, churches and barazas to plant and nurture trees.
“We add 3 per cent of trees to increase forest cover in Makueni and fight climate change. We are working closely with the National Government to plant trees in both short and long rains and nurture them for clean environment,” Nzioka.
Nzioka added that as a department, they will strengthen community forest associations to help them do beaconing of the forest, conservation, donations among other benefits.
He called upon the public to report any unlicensed logging.
He also revealed that nurseries will be certified to help the owners get ready market to sell their seedlings and get something for their pockets.

Makueni Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili called upon everyone from school children to take forest conservation as own social responsibility.
“We insisted that the special children be here at the event to learn and see what is happening. Our SDG agenda says leave no one behind,” Mulili said.
The Mwea Vocatinal Training Centre teacher Patrick Mwendwa asked the deputy governor to help and construct a dormitory to accommodate students.
The students presented presents to the deputy governor and other guests some of which are a sample of their projects done through the skills acquired.
“Our students have different skills ranging from masonry, carpentry and joinery, dressmaking and tailoring, hairdressing and beauty therapy, metal and fabrication and computer packages. We call for your support,” Mwendwa said.
