People who are known have cultivated a huge section of a school playground in Kisii in a clear defiance of the law and the community which donated it.
Consequently, the community around Rianyamwamu Primary School in Nyaribari Chache Constituency is calling on the police to investigate and arrest the suspects who dug the school field amid ownership wrangles.
Led by Tom Ratemo and Josephat Mayaka, they narrated how they woke up and found the whole field dug by known people who claim that the school sits on their land.
They expressed fear for their children’s safety and education continuity if the dispute continues.

“We want the government to intervene and tell us where to take our children next when schools reopen,” said Ratemo.
He said other parents have already started preparing to transfer their children to neighbouring schools like Riabamanyi and Kiogoro because of the commotion.
Other parents who talked to Education News appealed to the area chief to convene a public meeting with the residents and try to chart the way forward for the welfare of the school.
They said that the institution has more than 500 pupils, and closing it will be a burden to parents as they try to find alternatives.
“Let us not expect the government to come and solve small affairs like these. Let us come together and iron out the differences amicably,” said Doris Nyabonyi.
Kisii Central Deputy County Commissioner Maina Ngunyi appealed to the residents to follow lawful channels any time they felt dissatisfied with the course of events instead of taking the law into their hands.
