According to data ranging from March 23, 2023, to March 8, 2024, male teachers account for almost all the teachers deregistered by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for various offences.
This issue poses a significant threat in education sector and therefore, a decisive action is required.
Majority of these cases involve general disciplinary cases with male teachers more frequently failing to adhere to the code of conduct which is a growing concern within education sector.
Madam Pelesiah Akuthe, a don of Media and Communication at the Rongo University expresses alarm over the trend and emphasizes that many cases relate to lack of adherence to rules of the profession.
She also added that it’s surprising that only one female teacher is affected within the period which is a contrast to number of male teachers.
By March last year, a total of 209 teachers had been deregistered with 168 being deregistered in March 2023 and 41 in March 2024, thus showing a potential rise.
Statistics shows that a total of 36 teachers were deregistered in March 2023 then number rose to 73 teachers in August, decreased to 13 in September, then increased again to 23 teachers in November and October and a total of 41 teachers were pulled out in March 2024.
