Students Urged to Share Insights on New Higher Education Funding Model

University students have been urged to give their views regarding the new Higher Education Funding Model to the committee established by President Ruto as the committee begins public participation on the same.

Speaking during Machakos University’s 9th graduation ceremony, Principal Secretary of Higher Education and Research Dr. Beatrice Inyangala who represented the Cabinet Secretary said the committee set up by the president will soon be conducting Town Hall meetings for public participation on the model and welcomed students to give their views.

She said the government was committed to ensuring no deserving university student was left out of the allocation.

Machakos University Chancellor Dr James Mworia emphasized the central role played by Science, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) in the development of the nation and assured that no needy and deserving student will miss studies as the university was providing scholarships in collaboration with other stakeholders.

“No single needy and capable student will be denied the opportunity to pursue STEM programmes courtesy of our scholarships,” said Dr Mworia.

Dr Mworia said this year’s theme: Creating opportunities for a Sustainable Future’ is not only timely but essential and urged for collaboration with other stakeholders to shape the future.

Machakos County governor Wavinya Ndeti while addressing the congregation at the graduation ceremony said her Government was committed to enhancing education standards in the county through support to students’ welfare.

She said her Government aimed to create more collaboration between academia and industry and urged the graduates to step forward with confidence and contribute to the development of the country.

May you step forward with confidence and contribute to the development of our shared future,” she said.

Governor Ndeti said the 30% opportunities to the youth were real in her Government and no one needed to know anyone in government to access the opportunities.

She asked the graduates to apply whenever her Government advertised vacant opportunities to be considered.

Governor Ndeti also said her Government was soon rolling out the Wikwatyo and Youth Funds and urged the youth to apply for the funds and create employment for themselves and other people.

A total of 1400 graduates were awarded degree and diploma certificates across various fields.
