The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has announced the suspension of diploma and undergraduate university examinations scheduled for February 3-15, 2025, due to the ongoing strike by members of Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU).

This decision follows a special meeting of the University Senate held today.

In a statement seen by Education News and signed by Academic Registrar at TUK Dr Moses Wamalwa, all diploma and undergraduate students were required to vacate the university premises by 2:45pm today.

Additionally, students residing in the halls of residence were to leave by 5pm.

“We would like to inform all staff and students that the University Senate, in its special meeting held today, resolved to suspend the diploma and undergraduate university examinations scheduled for February 3-15, 2025, due to the ongoing industrial action by UASU and KUSU,” the statement reads in part.

“Further updates will be communicated in due course,” the letter added.

A strike notice issued on January 16 warned that lecturers and other university employees would go on strike if their grievances were not addressed.

This latest strike follows a previous warning from the regarding the government’s failure to implement the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

UASU Organizing Secretary Onesmas Muluki stated that although the agreement was signed in 2024, the government has yet to fulfill its commitments, including the payment of salaries for November and December for some lecturers. “We agreed that new salaries for university lecturers would be implemented in December, along with the arrears for October and November. Instead, we went into Christmas without receiving the promised salaries,” Muluki said.
